Qatar welcomes over 2 million visitors in first quarter 2024

26/05/24

Qatars Ministry of Tourism announced the State attracted over 2 million tourists in the first four months of 2024 during the recent Qatar Economic Forum.

The impressive figures were revealed during a panel discussion entitled ‘From the Gulf to the World: The Future of Tourism’ . Further statistics detailed the States successful progress in attracting tourists as 4 million visitors were recorded entering the country in 2023, marking a 58.4% growth compared to 2022.

It was further noted that the FIFA World Cup in 2022 was pivotal in supporting the region's tourism industry growth. As a result, the tournament significantly contributed to showcasing Arabian culture and Gulf heritage to the world, thereby attracting visitors and stimulating interest in the region. Such interest has resulted in a notable growth in tourism investments and the development of new tourist destinations to continue attracting even higher numbers.

Moreover, global tourism has rebounded significantly from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with travel levels surpassing 88% of pre-pandemic levels worldwide and exceeding pre-pandemic levels in the Middle East.

The regional increase in visitors can be attributed to notable unified efforts and cooperation between Gulf countries. Such initiatives include the development of the unified GCC Tourist Visa and the ‘Double Discovery’ campaign launched jointly by Qatar Tourism and Saudi Arabia aimed at enhancing visitors experience.

Tourism is an integral part of Qatars National Vision 2030 and increasing numbers is a key initiative in diversifying the non oil economy. Importantly, the burgeoning visitor numbers highlight the role of tourism in job creation and also emphasise the need for continuous infrastructure development. Notably, Qatar is committed to sustainable tourism practices and is heavily focusing on wildlife and environmental preservation initiatives such as the conservation of the whale shark and the reintroducion of the Arabian Oryx.
