Qatar’s land transport sector Sees 75% surge in transactions

10/11/24

Qatar's land transport sector demonstrated remarkable growth in the first nine months of 2024 with the Ministry of Transport executing a total of 9,238 transactions. This marks a 17% increase from the previous quarter and an impressive 75% rise compared to the same period last year. Notably, the third quarter recorded the highest activity, with 3,473 transactions, followed closely by the second and first quarters.

The land transport sector is pivotal to Qatar's economic development and aligns with the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030. Key services offered include road defect detection, implementation of safety measures, installation of directional signage, issuance of building permits, conducting traffic impact studies and approval of land transport network plans. The sector also facilitates preliminary approvals for limousine, land transport and car rental enterprises.

Over the past decade, Qatar has invested significantly in its transport infrastructure, particularly in preparation for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Developments have included enhanced roadways, advanced rail networks and improved public transport systems to accommodate a surge in visitors. It maintains a focus on sustainability with investments in electric trains and buses, as well as the creation of safe walking and cycling routes.

The land transport planning sector is responsible for establishing comprehensive policies governing land and railway transport activities. Additionally, the Ministry of Transport is advancing the National Strategy for the Logistics Sector 2024-2030, aimed at reinforcing Qatar's position as a global logistics hub and fostering economic diversification.

The Transportation Master Plan for Qatar 2050 (TMPQ 2050) serves as a strategic framework for the nation's land transport infrastructure. This ambitious plan encompasses 37 road network initiatives and 30 public transit projects, with a dual emphasis on economic growth and environmental stewardship.
