Qatar concludes Northern European tour building relations

Qatar recently concluded a European tour encompassing Norden countries Sweden, Norway and Finland with the aim of enhancing ties and exploring issues of mutual interest.

Commencing the visit in Sweden, officials signed several memorandas of understanding (MoUs) and a letter of intent for military cooperation, according to Qatar’s news agency (QNA).

One MoU covered political consultations, another entailed cooperation in the field of peace and reconciliation and a third was signed in the field of humanitarian and development cooperation. A fourth MoU covered the field of land transport and logistics services and another was related to cooperation in the field of social development and family support. Furthermore, Qatar Chamber and the Swedish Trade and Invest Council signed an MoU to enhance bilateral investment cooperation.

In Norway, the visit highlighted the longstanding and strong bilateral relationship between both countries and highlighted the valuable benefits of trade and interaction by further strengthening ties. During the visit, two MoU’s were signed, including in military cooperation and another in the field of peace and reconciliation. Additional clauses to a 2010 agreement were signed on avoiding double taxation and preventing fiscal evasion. According to figures from the QNA, Doha and Oslo’s trade rose to around QAR 1.3 billion (USD 356 million) in 2023, marking an 80% increase when compared to 2022.

The final stop of the tour was Finland, where discussions celebrated the two countries friendly relations of 50 years. Further aspects of cooperation and ways to enhance and develop them in the fields of investment, economy, energy, education and international cooperation were discussed. Figures released by Qatar’s Planning and Statistics Authority showed that Doha and Helsinki’s trade volume increased by 9.6% percent between 2022-2023, increasing from QAR 407 million (USD 111.5 million) to QAR 446 million (USD 122.2 million).
