Qatar committed to protecting personal data in age of AI

04/02/24

Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) recently organised a seminar entitled “Data Protection in the Age of AI” which coincided with International Data Privacy Day.

The event was held in collaboration with the American Department of Commerce and featured experts in data protection, legal professionals and speakers from the [US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Discussions focussed on global best practices in data privacy principles and the convergence of data protection and artificial intelligence (AI). In addition, the event explored the regulatory landscape for AI, the role of AI in ensuring compliance with regulations and considerations around cross border privacy rules. As a result, it noted that Generative AI (GenAI) is an emerging strategic tool for bolstering defences, which could potentially provide an advantage to an organisation’s cybersecurity policy.

During the event, the QFC highlighted the fact that Qatar was the first country in the Gulf and the third in the Arab world to issue a law to protect the privacy of personal data. Law number 13, ratified in 2016, sets out a framework to build capacity, promote innovation and encourage research and development. Most importantly, it focuses on ensuring the security of the States cyberspace and the importance of protecting personal data.

Data Privacy Day was approved by the European Union (EU) and corresponds to the signing of the Council of Europe Convention number 108, which governs best practices relating to the use of personal data across various technologies.
